About

What is TweetFilm?  Simple – it’s a way to watch a film with way more people than would fit in your loungeroom, using Twitter. It couldn’t be easier – at a scheduled time, everyone that wants to participate starts the chosen film at the same time, and then we live-tweet the whole thing.

Why bother doing this?  Because it already happens. People live-tweet their favourite TV shows all the time to enhance the experience.  Q&A and Master Chef are probably the best known examples within Australia, where we are based.  Live-tweeting, sharing your thoughts/observations/jokes/questions and reading those of your friends, becomes an integral part of watching the program.  I’ve already seen this work great with movies as they’re being broadcast – unfortunately then you’re limited to a network playing what you want, and even then, hoping enough other people might take part.  TweetFilm is a way to instigate that experience ourselves. Check out the How-To page for more info on how this works, and of course, follow us on Twitter!

Since starting TweetFilm in 2011, it has grown from a small home-based event to a free monthly screening where we project the Twitter feed alongside the movie at Loop in Melbourne’s CBD. Of course, if you can’t make it to the screening you can always join in via Twitter.

If you want to request films for future TweetFilm events, or need to contact us for any other reason, tweetfilm@gmail.com is the best way.

About Me

I’m a writer named Owen Vandenberg, and I love talking about movies. My personal Twitter account (which I use for my own contributions to the TweetFilm discussion) is here. If you’re interested in checking out my non-TF stuff, I also have a Tumblr and run an online literary journal called Capsule.

  1. I’m figuring if you had the 60s Batman film for the last screening, then I’m not out of line suggesting something like Flash Gordon (80s version) – loads to tweet about there, lots of surprise stars – Timothy Dalton with a mo, Ornella Muti at her seductive best, Max Von Sydow is awesome and even Brian Blessed gets a look-in. The sets and costumes are outrageous, and storyline – it got lost somewhere in the cosmic world. And the quotes!
“Flash, Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!”

If that one doesn’t appeal, then you might also consider Johnny Mnemonic – they don’t make dystopian fantasy like this anymore. Another film with lots of surprise cameos – Dolph Lundgren, Henry Rollins (as a mad scientist no less) & Ice-T. And of course more golden quotes: “I can carry nearly eighty gigs of data in my head.” – OMG

Looking forward to joining in soon!
