TweetFilm No. 5 – Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows, Part One

Not long now, and we’ll be a post-Potter society. The books are done, the final movie is out next week, the stars have grown up and moved on. Soon it all comes to an end. Then, after a couple of weeks of post-Potterdom, Pottermore will hit and the whole thing starts again.

Still, what better way to send off the film series than with a TweetFilm? For those of us in Australia, Deathly Hallows Part 2 premieres Wednesday July 13, which means many of you will be going to midnight screenings Tuesday evening. Well, before you leave to line up in the cold, you can relive Deathly Hallows Part 1 with all your fellow Potter fans on Twitter as we TweetFilm it from 7:30 pm, Tuesday July 12.

If you want to take part, get your copy of Deathly Hallows Part One, start it at 7:30 pm according to timeanddate.com’s Melbourne page and tweet to your heart’s content.  The feed for this hashtag will be a beautiful place… to tweet with friends…

TweetFilm No. 4 – Event Horizon

Few would disagree that the 90s were a great time for Sam Neill. The Hunt For Red October, Jurassic Park, In The Mouth of Madness (which I love unashamedly), and of course, Event Horizon. Probably Paul W.S. Anderson’s best film, responsible for teaching me one of the few latin phrases I know, and a great bit of cheesy sci-fi horror fun – sounds like a good candidate for a TweetFilm, no?

You can’t tweet – she won’t let you. Unless you use this hashtag:

#tfeventhorizon

We’ll be kicking things off this Monday evening at 7:30 pm, according to timeanddate.com’s Melbourne page. Hopefully we have some new participants after the Emerging Writers’ Festival event (which I’ll be doing a write-up of soon), so if it’s your first time playing along at home, check out our how-to guide; here are a few other links to help prepare you to travel beyond the boundaries of our universe, beyond known scientific reality.

TweetFilm at the Emerging Writers’ Festival – He Died With A Felafel In His Hand

We are very excited to announce our first live screening event, in partnership with Melbourne’s own Emerging Writers’ Festival! If you haven’t been to EWF in previous years, check them out, it’s a fantastic festival that does a lot to support upcoming writers. Our event on their website is here.

So the question came up, what film to choose for such a festival? Something Australian, surely. Something to do with writing. Prefereably something based on a well-known Australian book, maybe with an author who has already embraced the medium of Twitter… of course! Malcolm! Wait, no. He Died With A Felafel In His Hand!

Based on the novel by John Birmingham, He Died With A Felafel In His Hand has become an Aussie classic, brilliantly capturing the absurdity of living in a share house and the ongoing frustrations of trying to be a writer. Starring Noah Taylor and directed by Richard Lowenstein, Felafel will generate some interesting conversations about what it means to be a writer in Australia, as well as which fucking shelf the pineapple chunks belong.

So, for those in Melbourne who would like to attend, entry is FREE but bookings are essential. To secure your tickets, email director@emergingwritersfestival.org.au

If you’re not in Melbourne and still want to take part, it’s business as usual. We’ll still be synchronising with timeanddate.com’s Melbourne page, so if you follow the steps on our handy how-to guide, you should be all set. We’ll be using this hashtag:

#tffelafel

And as usual, here are a few links for you to get started:

TweetFilm No. 3 – Blade Runner

You’ve probably heard of this movie. Yes, it’s the absolute classic, Blade Runner. Specifically, the final cut version, not the theatrical cut, or the director’s cut (which isn’t entirely a director’s cut), or the workprint, or that fan-made edit that cuts out Batty entirely. That one’s just confusing.

One of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, a movie so important to modern cinema that even if you haven’t seen it, you know far more of it than you might realise. This also marks the first time we’ve tried a classic film as opposed to a recent popular one, so I’m looking forward to seeing how the discussion pans out.

At the stroke of 12 noon this Saturday, you will see tweets being lost, like tears in the rain. Especially if they use this hashtag:

#tfbladerunner

Here’s our how-to guide, here’s the page to synchronise your start time to, and here are some links. Hope to see you Saturday!

Wrap-Up – TweetFilm No. 2, The Social Network

Well, TweetFilm is certainly getting bigger – only our second film and we managed to get trending in Melbourne, which I’m obviously pretty pleased with. If you’d like to read the archive of the full discussion, you can download it here. And remember, read bottom to top.

And now, to the future! Literally, in the case of the next TweetFilm event, which will be happening Saturday May 7, the details of which will be announced tomorrow. Not only that, but we’ve got some very exciting news coming up about the first TweetFilm screening for Melbournians to attend! Stay tuned for more on that.

Thanks as always to everyone that’s been taking part in TweetFilm so far – you guys are all part of one big film-discussing family. And it’s a family that will hopefully keep growing, like one of those cults, but without… y’know, all the cult stuff. As always, if you have any questions or feedback, let me know in the comments or drop me a line at tweetfilm@gmail.com.

TweetFilm No. 2 – The Social Network

You don’t get to two TweetFilms without making a few enemies. Well, actually, you do, it’s remarkably easy. Anyway, I hereby announce the next TweetFilm event! It’s on Saturday April 9 at 12 pm AEST, and the film will be (as you may have guessed from above) The Social Network.

David Fincher’s 2010 homage to the glory days of 2003, The Social Network recently won Oscars for Adapted Screenplay, Score and Editing, as well as being nominated for 5 more. This one is an interesting beast for me. I enjoyed it, it’s very well made, but I didn’t come out of it thinking it was the best film of the year as many others seemed to. It definitely has one of the best scores of recent memory, and Sorkin and Fincher deserve all the credit for making the development of a website as compelling as they have. I’m really keen to see what you all think, of course, so why not join in?

When the clock strikes 12 according to timeanddate.com’s Melbourne page, The Social Network will have part of my attention – the minimum amount. The rest will be on the feed that uses the hashtag:

#tfsocialnetwork

Remember to read our how-to guide if this is your first time, and check out these links for more on The Social Network:

Post-Inception Wrap-Up

Firstly, a big thanks to everyone that participated in the first TweetFilm, it was great to see this idea come to fruition after the months of procrastination. For anyone who missed it, or if you just want to revisit the conversation, I’ve archived it right here:

TweetFilm Archive No. 1 – Inception

Remember to read chronologically bottom to top, since it’s a Twitter feed. Have any feedback on how the event was run? Or how the archive looks? Let me know via email or in the comments below.

The second TweetFilm is coming up very shortly, and will be announced right here tomorrow morning. There will be a one-week delay this month, so the event will actually be on April 9, as opposed to April 2 (I know, I know, rescheduling already?). But that just gives you plenty of time to get a copy of the film! Right? Yeah, that’s right!

TweetFilm No. 1 – Inception

I am pleased to announce that the first ever TweetFilm event will take place Sat March 5th at 12 noon for those in the Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane time zone (synchronise your clock to timeanddate.com), and that the film in question will be Christopher Nolan’s 2010 sci-fi action hit, Inception. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the guy who will break Batman in half, Inception has also recently snagged 8 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
UPDATE: Inception has now won 4 Oscars, including Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects!

If you want to take part, simply get a copy of Inception, follow the steps in our how-to guide and tweet along using the hashtag:

#tfinception

I’ll be posting a wrap-up in the days following, including an archive of the entire discussion so stay tuned. In the meantime, here are a few Inception-related links that may be of interest.
